The Painted Bunting is sometimes called the most beautiful bird in North America.

That is not hyperbole. Birdwatchers who see one for the first time — a male in full breeding plumage, cobalt blue head, scarlet-red breast, chartreuse and emerald back — often describe it as looking almost artificial. Like something painted by someone who had never been told that birds were supposed to be subtle.

It is not the only one. North America has an extraordinary gallery of brilliantly coloured songbirds — birds whose plumage looks, in the right light, like something made of glass. Which makes them, as it turns out, ideal subjects for stained glass portraiture.

This is a guide to the most colourful songbirds in the collection, and what makes each one worth having in a window.

Painted Bunting — The Most Colourful Bird in North America

Three colours, none of them subtle. The male Painted Bunting wears cobalt blue on the head, scarlet red on the breast and belly, and a patchwork of emerald green and chartreuse on the back. In stained glass, each of these colours is rendered in a different glass — cathedral cobalt, ruby red, and jewel-toned green — so the piece literally glows in three distinct colours simultaneously when backlit.

The Painted Bunting is found in the American South and Southeast — Florida, Louisiana, Texas, the Carolinas — and its range is limited enough that seeing one in the wild remains a genuinely notable event for most birdwatchers. It is one of the few birds where the stained glass version and the real bird are equally surprising.

Part of the Painted Bunting listing: Indigo Bunting, Goldfinch, Bluebird, Mockingbird, Cardinal, Pair of Cardinals, Hummingbird with Pink Flower.

Indigo Bunting — All Blue, Entirely Itself

Where the Painted Bunting uses three colours, the Indigo Bunting uses one — and makes it count. The male in breeding plumage is an almost electric, iridescent blue from bill to tail. In direct light it appears cobalt; in shade it can look almost black; at the right angle it shimmers.

In stained glass, the Indigo Bunting is one of the most dramatic pieces in the collection for exactly this reason: a single piece of deep cathedral blue glass, backlit, produces a quality of light that is genuinely hard to describe and easy to stop and stare at.

Baltimore Oriole — Orange and Black, No Compromise

The state bird of Maryland and one of the most immediately recognisable birds in eastern North America. The male Baltimore Oriole is vivid orange and jet black — a combination that in stained glass produces one of the most striking light effects in the shop. The orange cathedral glass in direct morning sun throws a warm amber-orange that fills the window frame around it.

The Oriole is part of the American Robin listing alongside Blue Jay, Cardinal, Chickadee, Downy Woodpecker, and Mourning Dove.

Blue Jay — Cobalt, White & Unmistakeable

The Blue Jay is one of the most recognised birds in North America and one of the most divisive — beloved by some, dismissed by others as too common and too loud. The birdwatchers who love them, love them genuinely: the crest, the cobalt and white plumage, the boldness at a feeder, the intelligence.

In cobalt and white cathedral glass with black detail, the Blue Jay suncatcher is one of the most graphically striking pieces in the collection — high contrast, clean, and immediately identifiable. Also available: Steller’s Jay in the Birds & Insects listing for the western US counterpart.

American Goldfinch — Canary Yellow, Summer Arrival

The American Goldfinch is one of the last migrants to arrive and among the most eagerly anticipated — its canary yellow plumage in summer is a genuine seasonal marker. In many parts of the Midwest and Northeast it is the state bird (Iowa, New Jersey, Washington), and the birdwatcher who fills a nyjer seed feeder in spring is waiting, specifically, for this bird.

In bright canary yellow cathedral glass with black wing markings, the Goldfinch suncatcher is the most unambiguously cheerful piece in the collection. It is also, consistently, one of the most popular choices for a gift.

Eastern Bluebird — Sky Blue and Rust

Sky blue body, warm orange-rust breast, white belly — the Eastern Bluebird is the colour combination that looks almost too elegant to be a real bird. It is the state bird of Missouri and New York, and its recovery from near-extinction through the nest box programme of the 1970s and 80s is one of the genuine conservation success stories of North American birding.

The Bluebird suncatcher pairs sky blue cathedral glass for the body with warm amber-orange opalescent glass for the breast — two different glass types in the same piece, which gives it unusual depth when backlit.

🎁 For the Birdwatcher Who Loves Colour

These are the pieces that people who love colour — really love colour, the way birdwatchers do — tend to respond to most strongly. They are not subtle. They are not meant to disappear into a room. They are meant to be seen in a window at the right hour of the morning, throwing light across a wall in cobalt, scarlet, amber, and gold.

Every piece in the collection is handcrafted using the Tiffany copper foil method from 3mm Spectrum art glass. Production time is 5–7 business days. Custom species and colour combinations available on request.
